Biographical Sketch 
John A. Thompson is a Professor in the Department of Surgery. Before coming to UAB in 1989, Dr. Thompson held positions at NIH, Lombardi Cancer Center (Georgetown University), Jerome H. Holland Laboratory (American Red Cross), Life Technologies, Inc., and Genetic Therapy, Inc. His research is supported by grants from NIH.

Research/Clinical Interest
Molecular Mechanisms of Angiogenesis
Research activity in this laboratory has focused on structural features of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family of polypeptides, including signal peptide sequences, receptor binding domains, the heparin-binding region and nuclear translocation signals. We have developed a method to integrate selective cell transplantation (using three-dimensional, non-degradable, solid supports coated with FGF) with site-specific angiogenesis, that permit the long-term introduction of eukaryotic cells into a mammalian host.
